Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a major cause of worry to many, especially to women in African communities. In Nigeria, the federal government abolished its practice. However, some communities have refused to abide by the rules due to various self-seeking beliefs emanating from ignorant minds.
When interviewed, a woman from Oyo state (name withheld) said that after the Federal Government of Nigeria abolished the practise of FGM in the country, the practice was stopped in her community. She said, however, that when five women died at childbirth in the community, the people ascribed the women's deaths to the fact that they were not circumcised. Hence, the practice was re-ignited.
A local circumciser (name withheld), also from Oyo state, said that FGM started as far back as during the slave trade, when there was the need for slave masters to identify their slaves and prevent occasions of incest. He added that there are three types of marks in their culture; tribal marks, tattoos and marks of circumcision. He emphasized that God commanded that children be circumcised, and that God did not stipulate whether it was for males or females. Thus, he said, that females must also be circumcised, and anyone who was not circumcised would go to hell.
It is evident that many are still in the dark about the dangers of female genital mutilation on the lives of young girls and women. Therefore, it is our duty to educate and enlighten others, so that this cruel act can stop. We celebrated International Women's Day about two weeks ago on March 8, and today, March 26 is Mothers' Day. Let it not just be all about the celebrations, let us create an impact in the lives of those suffering the consequences of other people's actions by creating awareness. Lagos State Government Bans Live Band Music In Bars and Restaurants
The General Manager of Lagos State Environment Protection Agency (LASEPA), Adebola Shabi, said the decision was triggered by the numerous reports and petitions tendered by residents of the state about noise pollution from bars, beer parlours and religious houses.
Concerning the noise from religious houses, the general manager of LASEPA mandated churches to procure sound proof. In his own words, Shabi said: "Any new church to be built must come and get a sign-off from the agency, the old ones should start putting sound proof now. It must be acoustic."
While emphasising on the ban of live band music at bars and other related places, the LASEPA boss warned: "Any complaint from the residents henceforth, there will be sanction. They must obtain permit to do so, and failure to obtain a permit, the fine is #500,000. We must discourage needless noise making at our residences."
The LASEPA boss also warned those who convert residential areas to commercial areas without permission from the government to desist from such act.
In 2015, there were over 1,527 reported cases of noise pollution in Lagos state, with 57 of them resulting in medical concerns.

NECO Releases NOV/DEC 2016 GCE Results
While announcing the results in Minna on Tuesday, the registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NECO, Prof. Charles Uwakwe, said that out of the 47,941 candidates that registered, 47,118 candidates sat for the examination. He also added that 28,530 candidates, representing 60.55 percent of the total number of candidates that wrote the examination, passed with five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
He advised that candidates should check their results online on the NECO results checker using their registration numbers and scratch cards.

NABTEB Releases 2016 NOV/DEC GCE Results
The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has released the results of the 2016 November/December National Business Certificate (NBC)/National Technical Certificate (NTC) and the Advanced National Business Certificate (ANBC) /Advanced National Technical Certificate (ANTC) examinations.
The Registrar and Chief Executive of NABTEB, Mrs Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, who made the announcement on Tuesday, said that a total of 21,476 candidates recorded credit pass in English Language and Mathematics, representing 47.48 percent of the total candidates. She also said that a total of 49,850 candidates enrolled for the examinations in 1,803 centres. Out of this figure, 45,974 candidates registered for Ordinary Crafts Level while 3,876 candidates applied for Master Craft Level.
She also added that out of the total number of registered candidates, a total of 48,842 candidates sat for the examination, comprising 45,230 NBC/NTC and 3,612 ANBC/ANTC candidates, representing 98.8 percent of the total enrolment. Also, she noted that out of the total number of candidates that wrote the examination, about 1.394 percent of candidates were involved in examination malpractice, assuring that those involved would be adequately penalized.

- Input your Candidate Number in the space provided;
- Select the type of examination, e.g May/Jun, Nov/Dec;
- Select your examination year;
- Input the Card Serial Number of your scratch card which starts with a letter prefix, e.g N012345678;
- Input the 12-digit PIN on your scratch card;
- Input your email address, if you want your result sent through mail;
- Click 'submit' and wait for your result to come up.

Re-opening of EKSU Students Registration Portal
- A copy of their course registration form printed from the portal.
- Their 2016/2017 Student's Identity Card.
- Evidence of payment of Student Union dues.
Therefore, all students are expected to print four copies of their course registration form from the portal, submit three of the copies to their HOD and keep the fourth as their examination permit.
All students are also expected to collect their 2016/2017 Student’s ID Card at their HOD’s office from Monday, 20th of February, 2017.
Warning ⚠: Any student that fails to register on the portal before the deadline will not be allowed to sit for the examination.

Important Information To All FUPRE New Students On Matriculation
All fresh students of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun are hereby informed to collect their academic gowns from the academic office from Wednesday, 15th February, 2017 between 12pm and 3pm, after completion of the payment of the sum of #1,000 into the University account, and presentation of receipt to the academic division. Payments should be made via www.remita.net
All academic gowns should be returned to the academic division after the matriculation, on or before Monday, 27th February, 2017. Late return will attract a fine of #1,000 for each additional day. The sum of #10,000 will be charged for the replacement of any lost or damaged gown.
Participation in the matriculation exercise is compulsory for every registered fresh student of the institution. Therefore, fresh students who have not registered with the Health Centre are advised to do so. Only students who have undergone the medical screening will be allowed to participate in the ceremony, as it is a prominent part of the registration exercise.

FUTO SHUT DOWN AS VIOLENT PROTEST WREAKS HAVOC
In the early hours of today, there was a protest by students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri due to the hike in fees, and the penalty for failure to meet the deadline for payment. The protest which was supposed to be peaceful turned out violent, wreaking havoc to the school's property. The consequence of this is the decision of the school management to shut down the school indefinitely. Students in the hostels were ordered to vacate the premises before 4pm today or face the wrath of security operaives. It would be recalled that during the protest earlier today, students destroyed the school's property, and looted the school's ICT centre. It would also be recalled that the school management placed an extra charge of #10,000 as fine for anyone who fails to completely pay his tuition fees before the deadline. COMMOTION AS PROTEST ROCKS THE FUTO COMMUNITY
The normally calm environment of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, has witnessed unrest due to the hike in fees, despite unsatisfactory services, by the school management. The protest was initially scheduled for Monday, 20th of February, but surprisingly, the students of the school decided to embark on what they called 'an awareness protest' today. The warning protest which was intended to be peaceful ended up in an unplanned riot, as students, suspected to be majorly cultists and those from neighbouring tertiary institutions began destroying the school property. The windows of departmental buildings and lecture halls were smashed with stones and sticks by some of the angry students. Popular buildings like the Senate building, SEET complex, CCE building, ICT centre and workshop 3 suffered the wrath of the angry students. Below are some pictures of the protesting students and some damages caused.
